The archive

What this is

His family is building a complete record of Dieterich Spahn’s work: each commission, where it is, when it was made, and whether it survives. Every statement in the record is tied to the source it came from, and anything uncertain is marked as uncertain rather than guessed. This site shows part of that record.

What is not known yet

No one knows how many windows he made. The figures published during his life — on his own website, in gallery biographies, on Wikipedia — were estimates, and they disagree with one another. His own commission list, compiled in 2009, has 158 entries from 1971 to 2009, and other sources already show work that is not on it. The archive will publish totals when it can count them, with the method behind each.

The glass shown here is what his studio’s website presented between 2012 and 2018: the commissions he chose to show. Most of his work is not here yet.

Do you know of a window or a painting?

If your church, school or building has glass by Dieterich Spahn, or you own one of his paintings, please write to archive@dieterspahn.com. The most useful things to include:

  • the name of the building and its city
  • a photograph, if you can take one
  • anything you know about when it was made or installed
  • whether it is still in place

People who worked with him — at Peter Dohmen Studios, at Dieterich Spahn & Associates, or at Willet Hauser — are especially welcome to write.

Some of his paintings can be seen in the Galerie88 collection.
